If you enjoy bowling on a regular basis you have probably noticed that bowling lanes are often different and this can affect the way the ball rolls. In order to compensate for this you should familiarize yourself with the following tips.
If, in order to obtain strikes, all that one needed to do was to throw the ball, it would be pretty easy. However there is no more chance of that than there is of you sprouting wings and flying! Some will state that every single lane is different. This is not far from the truth as one finds that a pair of lanes are usually different from each other.
You will discover that some lanes ‘run out of the window’, to use bowling lingo. Rather than having some difficulty hooking the ball you find that you achieve too much hook. Other lanes tend to ‘hold’ the ball. This is when you find that, instead of having much hook you instead have difficulty getting the ball to come up in the pocket.
These differences are the ones that bowlers tend to encounter more frequently, although you will find lanes with enough hook to suit you. Naturally, what is right for you might not be so for your fellow teammates and you should keep that in mind if they are not performing as well as you are.
You need to be able to adjust your usual delivery without any problems in accordance with the type of lane that you are bowling on. Irrespective of the lane you are using your first bowl should be from your usual position. Only once you have seen how the ball moves should you then change your position. When it comes to moving this is the most basic rule:
Assuming you are a right-handed bowler you should move slightly left while maintaining the same spot, if your ball is either coming up too fast or is crossing the lane.
This method is appropriate when you go bowling on lanes that are too slow.
Spot bowling means that you should take the spot down lane from where the ball breaks toward the pocket into consideration. Invariably this is only about two thirds down the lane and is never as far away as the head pin.
From where you take up your position imagine a line drawn down all the way down your lane once you have determined how your ball breaks. From the spot where the ball breaks you move to the foul line where you release the ball so that it rolls over your spot. Some bowlers might find that this spot is too far down the lane and so does not suit them, while others find it rather helpful.
You will find that it can be quite advantageous to move slightly to the right of your usual spot if you are bowling on a fast lane. It is necessary to do so if the ball is not reaching the head pin.
The technique favored by experienced bowlers might be the one that you find most suitable.
When bowling on a slow lane this technique does not require you to move to the left, because you move your chosen spot slightly to the right while beginning from the same position for your approach.
Likewise, if you are bowling on a fast lane, you move your spot slightly to the left and proceed as usual.
If you are experiencing too much hook moving the spot to the right, rather than your position, is the best solution for you.
Remember that one board can make a significant difference. It is important to bear that in mind so that you do not make any big changes to either your position or your spot.
By bowling on lanes that are not favorable you will learn how the ball will perform. You will be just like the professionals who are able to discern the proper adjustments after they have bowled only one ball.
And lastly, altering the speed of the ball will help you to find the strike pocket. If you find that the ball is not reaching the head pin you should reduce the speed and, if it keeps crossing the lane, you should then increase the speed.
If you are familiar with basic bowling tips and rules you will know that this is a contradiction of the one which advocates mastering a smooth delivery and sticking with it.
With practice and experience you will learn how to read a lane and how to determine the necessary changes you should make.
